TozziniFreire Advogados has advised a subsidiary of Brazilian schoolbook publisher Abril Educação in its acquisition of private education company pH group.

The pH group drew counsel from Velloza, Girotto E Lindenbojm Advogados Associados in the deal, which closed on the 15 April for an undisclosed amount.

The latest acquisition reflects heightened activity in Brazil’s education sector, which in January saw TozziniFreire team up with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP to advise Anhanguera Educacional Participações on its sale of US$494 million in shares.

It also comes in the same month as a similar acquisition by Anhanguera Educacional Participações which saw the company acquire shares in two educational institutions held by the Anchieta Group – for which it was advised by Vella Pugliese Buosi e Guidoni.

Abril Educação comprises publishing houses Ática and Scipione, which sold more than 38 million copies of schoolbooks in 2009 and has more than 15,000 authors on its books.
