Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr e Quiroga Advogados has helped private equity investor Actis Fund make an investment in Editora CNA Cultural Norte Americano, a Brazilian language teaching company.

Velloza & Girotto Advogados Associados advised Editora CNA for the deal, which was signed on 5 September and closed on 12 September. Actis paid US$70 million for the 40 per cent stake.

Editora CNA operates through a language teaching franchising network which has more than 500 units and over 500,000 students on its books across Brazil.

Actis turned to Mattos Filho for its previous foray into Brazil’s education sector. In February, the firm helped it purchase a stake in Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul, one of Brazil’s leading universities.

Over the past year the education sector in Brazil has seen a number of M&A deals. Kroton turned to Lobo & de Rizzo Advogados to acquire the Uniasselvi group in May, as well as for a merger with UNOPAR, the largest distance learning institution in Brazil, in December last year. In May Mattos Filho helpedprivate higher education institution Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul acquire rival Universidad Ciudade de São Paulo.
